Physical Accessibility Policy
Shadowhawk Blades is committed to making all possible accommodations for those who wish to try blacksmithing.
If you have physical limitations, please contact us for information on how we can accommodate you. We have experience in accommodations for: limitations on joint movement, limitations on amount of physical activity possible, limitations on standing, and hard of hearing. Other issues can be accommodated but we may need to ask potentially invasive questions in order to determine if we are able to offer a safe and enjoyable experience for you.
Due to our hearing loss we are not able to accommodate language or vocal barriers unless you bring a companion who can help us understand each other if needed.
Everyone is welcome to bring a companion, who may also assist with the physical work if desired.
Assistance Animals are welcome with advance notice. Be aware that the area is not fenced and some animals do not respond well the sound of hammer on anvil.
DESCRIPTION OF THE BLACKSMITHING AREA
The first area used for blacksmithing classes is the area for the forging. It is outdoors with a roof, has a sandy floor, and includes many pieces of equipment, both portable and non-portable. Current equipment arrangement does not allow for wheelchair access but a forge and anvil can be moved outside (under a tree) for access. The outside area has sandy soil, grass, and potentially leaves or limbs around it (depending on time of year and weather). The forging process requires standing in front of a fire and swinging a 1-3 pound hammer with one hand while holding tongs in the other. Both hands will need similar strength but assistance with one of those parts can be provided to allow single-hand activity. Equipment adjustment to allow sitting while forging is possible but anvil height and placement is a safety issue (related to protection from injury of joints and muscles.) Most of the time we will use a gas forge so there will be no smoke; a coal forge is also possible so please advise us if avoiding smoke or sulfur is a concern.
The second area used for blacksmithing classes is the area used for grinding and finishing. It is indoors with a steep ramp to the door. The amount of equipment inside the shop may not allow for wheelchair access around the workstations, depending on the width of the chair. With advance notice we may can make the workstations accessible or move a workstation outdoors. The grinding portion will require holding the blade against a sandpaper grinding wheel with force; some fine motor control will be needed for hand safety and this portion of the work uses arm strength. The setting of the handle will use glue, grinding and/or sanding, and possibly burning into the handle material. The entire grinding/finishing process will be dusty and a mask is suggested if you have respiratory issues.
